IRCTC - some welcome news!

It has been the surprise moment that I have been waiting for years! IRCTC working properly without any glitches…

It so happened that I was able to book 5 tickets in 15 minutes with just one glitch (due to a double click that I did accidentally) and to my utter shock, I was able to book a ticket in Pooled Quota at 830 AM in the morning without any glitch, in just 3 minutes.

There have been drastic and sweeping changes announced in batches for IRCTC bookings over the recent months. This has reduced the possibility of a fraudulent booking to a greater extent, allowing genuine users fetch their prized rewards of confirmed tickets. IRCTC is a classic case of an FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) in 6-sigma terms. Following are my notes:

1. Tatkal bookings moved to 10 AM – this reduced the pressure on opening day bookings at 8 AM

2. Only one login per IP ID – both in terms of windows and in terms of logins. This reduced the possibility of multiple user logins from the same machine

3. Only 2 tickets per login between 8 AM and 10 AM (or 10 AM to Noon in case of Tatkal) – curbs the additional tickets that automatic bots book

4. Random phone calls to numbers provided in the ticket to verify PNR and passenger data, for tickets booked during the crucial first two hours and automatic cancellation if verification is not successful – curbs tickets booked by fraudulent agents

5. Raids against touts and fraudulent agents

6. Intensified verification through ED for suspected tickets combined with detraining and penalties – brought down the number of passengers who buy tickets in forged random names for a premium at the last minute

7. Stopping travel websites from booking tickets in the crucial two hour window – aligning them at par with agents, bringing down the server load

8. Captcha code word verification for bookings to control automatic macros from running

Real good steps in the right direction, although they may be seen as strict measures. If a genuine passenger is ultimately happy, it is ok to do it!
