Dasavatharam - Bloopers

Well, it is a film from Kamal Hassan - it is logical for us to expect some logic in it. Here is the list of bloopers that I observed:

1. Perambalam at Chidambaram is shown to the left of the gopuram. It means the gopuram in picture is West Vaasal. Perambalam is not so promiximate to the West Vaasal.

2. The thaali that the old Asin was wearing looks like a brand new one straight from GRT!

3. The fight sequence of Nambi in Govindarajar Sannidhi is fully 'Kamalism'

4. Any samudram related stuff for Govindaraja Perumal is always at Kille (Killai). Film shows Kulothungan's procession taking Kollidam river which is wrong.

5. While Napolean has played his given role nicely, the entire character of Kulothunga Cholan is depicted as a comedy role in the film. There are traces of cinema villa(in)-thanam in Napolean.

6. Inadequate security measures in the University...Anyone can steal anything by enacting a usual tamil-cinema trick!

7. The cash exchange is routine cinema stuff

8. Helicopter in DC without being monitored!!

9. Intentional?? 'Kallai mattum kandaal kadavul theriyadhu' instead of 'theriyamattar'. Also, looks like it is hinting an old tamil proverb that is often misquoted -- 'kallaai kandaal naayai kaanOm, naayaai kandaal kallai kaanOm' is the correct version. If you see a dog sculpture as a dog, you will not see the stone in it, if you see it as a simple stone, you will not see the sculpture in it...

10. The paanai breaking ceremony done when Nambi is tied to the vigraham is totally unwarranted. How did the Censor board allow a scene that portrays final rites performed to a vigraham (although it can be defended that the person was tied to the vigraham). This offends me as a Vaishnavaite.

11. 80+ year old Krishnaveni paati walking on the shoulders of gentlemen in the agraharam of Chidambaram. Illogical ab initio.

12. Paati's version of uttering 'kattaaila poravan' is cinematic, cordless works without pressing the talk button.

13. This cannot escape my eyes!! Single line electrified BG line near Chidambaram - no way!! The line that is shown while Kamal and Asin are travelling in the train after escaping from Fletcher for the first time is infact Chengalpattu - Arakkonam branch line!!

14. Toilet / Shouchalayam scene or stuff is a must in every Kamal film, without being an exception, d.tharam fulfills this requirement too.

15. The entire sequence of Paati makes me think whether this is to tease Hindus by reminding us of an incident that happened in CJ a few years back - especially, the scene when Balram Naidu comes to the matam to arrest a person and finally ends up taking paati with him.

16. Typical Kamalisms in Mukuntha song:
a. Paati showing thumbs up sign
b. paati singing 'mukuntha' as chorus in apaswaram

17. Fletcher drives manual transmission cars and bikes of India with ease!! Cannot digest!

18. A fight is a must for a kung-fu etc specialist Narahasi!! He comes and finds Fletcher in Santhome beach to have a duel, whereas poor guys of TN Police (who were travelling along) cannot find them. whoa!!

19. Kamal, Asin and Fletcher run all the way in early morning from Chindadripet MRTS station (MCPT) to Santhome beach - Cant we send them to Beijing to fetch a Gold or two? And when in Chennai did we have midnight services in MRTS? Look at the crowd in MCPT station at that unearthly hour! Also, the station that they boarded looks like a station in Chengalpattu - Arakkonam route. Two illogical sequences:
a. There is no direct train from CGL through MRTS route.
b. Even if there is any, Kamal and Asin are shown taking Velachery - Beach route which is entirely the opposite one.

All the above bloopers apart, there are a few things I liked very much:

1. Balram Naidu - excellent portrayal. Long since he did one like this (remember Kameswaran?)

2. Asin's costumes - both puraana and new, especially sengal colour silk saree with green border. (he he he)

3. Mukuntha song inspite of the fact that it is (Chanakya chanakya + oru poiyavadhu solladi kannE + aasai aasai ippozhudhu) divided by 3. I guess it is set in Keeravani raagam.

4. Kamal's efforts in making each character look different.

Kamal - As an ardent fan of Writer Sujatha, I can guess this film is your tribute to him by concentrating on the chaos theory and butterfly effect, his favourites. Neenga nalla pannalainu solla mudiyala, nalla panniyirukalaam.

Your strategy to analyze the nook and corner of the film is very nice.
Keep blogging

Nice writeup. Nice analysis. You have observed a lot. Even I did observe a few things, but not mistakes. Overall the film was fine, so I didn't bother much.

Let me give my comments:-

* Helicopter in DC not being monitored. I observed it twice. But maybe Fletcher has got some influence with the authorities. Afterall he is EX ! Angaiyum politics erukkadha?

* Yes, final rites being performed to a God. Not right. But it shows the cruelty done to Vishnu. Take it that way. Censor board need not interfere in this at all. And yes, they can defend themselves by saying that a person is tied to it. My predictions is that final rites are being done to Nambi, not the idol.

* 94 year old ! I found a blooper!

* Paati having the cordless in hand. I think she must have operated something to make it work. Isn't it?

* Single Line BG near Chidambaram. Right da, I can never accept it too. In the theater, I told my friends, they felt like slapping me and asked me to forget railways for sometime.

* Yes, the MRTS section. I got confused there too.

From a Kamal fan to a Critic :
(Nothing personal)

Despite being a Kamal fan, I have never claimed him to be flawless or prefect. Most of his fan's do not. He himself doesn't. But he is one of the few bests we got !

But when people become ultra expert critics(when it comes to his films) and try to find the flaws(alone) in his films, it really creates frustration. May be it is because he has raised the expectation bar severely over the last 2 decades.

If its that you enjoyed the important things and the movie as a package and found these flaws for fun, good. But if you were concentrating on finding flaws, still good :) but try to channelize your findings in a better way than a blog ! It will be helpful for his future projects.

BTW, I guess (as you have mentioned your subtly) Vaishnavam is sure adding some -ve bias when it comes to Kamal (as it does for a thousand other people) :)

Now let me post my opinion on some of the findings !

2) Asin's thaali doesn't need so much attention in film with so many important and attractive things ! (This finding hints me that may be you are in the category that can start channelizing your findings in a better platform)

3) Yeah !The fight by Nambi is full of Kamalism i.e, near to perfection.
Try to search for the blog somebody wrote on that fight sequence. (The blogger had mentioned how that entire sequence was choreographed with native Dravidian style martial art moves without the intrusion of Japanese & Chinese martial art moves owing to the period of the events)

About Kul.Chozhan, I guess Napolean character is Kul.Chozhan II, not the famous Kul.Chozhan! I am surprised that you removed your Vaishnavite hat here :) But the cinema thanam (to dignify the protagonist) is sure there!

9) Kamal didn't pen the lyrics for Kallai Mattum song. Are you trying to say that Kamal intruded is Vaali's work or are you doubting Vaali's theism ? ;)

I am sad you couldn't or at least didn't appreciate the lyrics of that song ! It had the best (and very intelligent) lyrics we could have asked for !

10) That whole ceremony is about Nambi. Isn't that obvious ? Or do you mean to say Nambi's son is performing those rituals to PerumaL ??

11) Very true ! Cinematic ! Kamal do includes certain illogical things in a lot of his commercial movies. I wonder why .

15) Don't be so much hurt my dear hindu friend ! Its probably your bias that's exaggerating things for you.

17) Fletcher is an EX-CIA agent . Do we have any idea what kind of training CIA agents go through. WE DON'T ! BUT WE ACCEPT IT IF IT IS A JASON BOURNE ?!!!!!!!!!

18) Very much YES. That fight is needed. DASA was a movie for the 6+ million tamil makkaL. Commercial cinema items are a must!

Things (I think) should have been either avoided or done in a better way in Dasa.
1) Computer Graphics should nt have been used in places where it was not needed. During the Kamal-asin bike chase, the train argument sequence, etc. Or they shouldn't have compromised quality for time !

2) Heroism revolving Poovaraghan ! Was it KSR's inclusion ???? P.Vasu was pathetic. Should have casted someone better.

3) Illogical stunts involving the Paati ! like you had mentioned

4) The whole chase was a bit too long!

5) Some justice should have been done to Kalifulla's character. Kamal efforts (and pain he took) in portraying that character went un-appreciated since the character itself lacked depth :(
